as a late-identified AuDHDer, I intimately understand the distress when relationships of all shapes feel confusing because we're always trying to read the room and somehow missing - or misinterpreting - what's being sent our way
for many of us, this leads to a cycle of anxiety, reactivity, guilt, and then shame and loneliness; for others, we head straight for the shame and loneliness, then close off even further by convincing ourselves that we're better off alone to protect us from trying and failing yet again
no matter which route our protective parts take, the destination is the same: isolated without a way for our tender parts to receive what they're really seeking, which is to feel seen and, ultimately, accepted
in my experience supporting individuals and couples through a relational and embodied approach to IFS therapy, I have found there can be another way for us to navigate the complexity of our relationships that feels more freeing; pathways that don't require masking or shutting down to get our needs for connection met
